Ju Wenjun retains the Women's World Chess Champion title after winning the rapid playoff against the challenger Aleksandra Goryachkina with a score of 2½-1½.After battling during two weeks in a match split between Shanghai and Vladivostok, the classical part of the competition ended in a tie (6-6), with three victories each and six draws.

The playoff, played today in the Blue Hall amphitheater of the Far Eastern University in Vladivostok, consisted of four 25-minute rapid games. Goryachkina was very close to the victory in the first game, and she also dominated the second, but the challenger failed to convert her advantage on both occasions. On the third assault, Ju Wenjun followed the same opening as in the first game, but she introduced an improvement that allowed her a more aggressive approach. The Chinese Champion achieved a victory that put her ahead in the scoreboard for the third time in this match.

In the final game, Goryachkina, with the white pieces, was forced to win, but this time she failed to pull out a miraculous win, and she had done two days ago. The challenger played an audacious line that implied sacrificing a pawn in exchange for activity, and she managed to get the initiative. But the World Champion returned the material and managed to keep the balance, taking the game to a draw that was good enough to retain her crown.

FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament - Aleksandra Goryachkina is the new World Championship challenger

Kazan (Russia), 14th June 2019 - Aleksandra Goryachkina had a winning position against Tan Zhongyi in round 12 of the Women's Candidates Tournament, but decided to go for perpetual check and sign a draw, as this secured her 1st place in Kazan. The 20-year-old will play Ju Wenjun in the next Women's World Championship match.

An overwhelming performance

Getting such a clear-cut victory in a Candidates Tournament - with 2 rounds to spare - cannot but be regarded as a career-changing performance for a 20-year-old. Aleksandra Goryachkina will play her first World Championship match after having got her ticket with a commanding performance. While doing so, she also managed to climb to 3rd place in the live ratings list, reducing the distance between her rating and that of Ju Wenjun from 55 to 22.4 points (for the time being).

The game that confirmed Aleksandra's 1st place finished drawn, but she could have easily kept on trying to get a win, as she was clearly on top in the final position. By then, however, Kateryna Lagno - who still had a mathematical chance to catch up with her - had lost against Anna Muzychuk, which meant the half point was enough to secure the title.

Aleksandra Yuryevna Goryachkina (Russian: Александра Юрьевна Горячкина; born 28 September 1998 in Orsk, Russia) is a Russian chessgrandmaster. She has got the title Grandmaster in 2018. She is a two-time Russian Women's Champion and was also twice World Girls Under-20 Champion.                  Her FIDE and Peak ratings are both 2537 (realized in June 2019).
